ABOUT US

Our Mission

Our mission is to financially support the San Gabriel Hospital in La Paz Bolivia, so that it can become sustainable and continue offering affordable, high quality secondary health care to all communities in the city.

HOW WE WORK

The San Gabriel Foundation works mainly on a project-to-project basis. Together with the San Gabriel Hospital we discuss the hospital’s needs and prioritize the requirements based on the benefits they will provide for the community.

The resulting project is then described in detail and the necessary funds are defined. The San Gabriel Foundation then works to get the project financed.

Our focus is to finance the improvement of infrastructure and the purchase of equipment. We do not cover the hospital’s current expenses. All projects are selected with the goal of getting the hospital to a place where it can function without donations.

HOW WE FUND OUR PROJECTS

Where our funds come from

The San Gabriel Foundation gets its funding mainly from membership fees and donations. We also strive to organize at least one event per year to increase awareness for the association and the San Gabriel Hospital as well as to raise funds.

Where the money goes

Since 2003 the association has collected more than 250,000 Euros for the hospital. 97% of all this money arrived at the hospital to cover the expenses from the specified projects. To maintain the low administrative costs everyone working at the association is a volunteer. Our goal is to maintain this ratio.

OUR HISTORY

The San Gabriel Hospital was inaugurated in 1983 as a health care institution for the poorest communities in La Paz, offering health care services to all in need, regardless of their income. The attention provided to these people was completely financed by donations. However, in the late 90s the stream of donations began to dry up and the hospital started having financial problems. Hence, Dr. Lieselotte Bauer de Barragán changed the hospital's model and started charging for medical services. To maintain the hospital's social commitment, however, the fees were set at a very low price point. This enabled the hospital to run its operations sustainably, but it was not enough to cover any investment in infrastructure or medical equipment. Dr. Lieselotte Bauer de Barragán traveled to Germany and proposed the establishment of an organization that would support the San Gabriel Hospital financially, so it could make necessary investments to maintain the hospital's service quality. The founder’s sister Ingrid Classen-Bauer and her husband Joachim Classen made this task their own. In 2003 they founded the nonprofit association “San Gabriel” or “Hilfe für das Lehrkrankenhaus “San Gabriel” in La Paz Bolivien” in Hamburg, Germany. Since then the association has been funding projects for the hospital.
